Scenic rivers, historic canals, railroads and towns, green mountains and valleys, natural areas, remnants of early industries, distinctive religious heritage and active cultural arts await you as you follow the 165-mile historic route of the Delaware Canal, Lehigh Navigation System and Lehigh Valley Railroad. Originally built from 1827 to 1845, the job of this transportation system was to bring coal from the anthracite region to the more populated markets along the eastern seaboard. In the process, it opened the region to development and led to the establishment of towns and cities which give today’s Corridor its vibrant character.
Experience the fun of a whitewater rafting trip or a biking excursion through the Lehigh River Gorge between White Haven and Jim Thorpe or stop at nearby Hickory Run State Park and take in the vast sea of rock at Boulder Field, a remnant of the last ice age and a designated National Natural Landmark. Don’t forget to visit Eckley Miners’ Village, a state historic site which preserves and interprets life in a typical ‘patch’ town. Visit the Lehigh Valley where industrial giants like Bethlehem Steel and Mack Trucks co-exist with Moravian Communities.
Two visitors’ centers await your arrival: Old Mauch Chunk Landing in historic Jim Thorpe is the gateway to outstanding recreational opportunities, shopping and breathtaking scenery. The whole family has something in store at Two Rivers Landing in Easton. The National Canal Museum shares space with the Crayola Factory, a fun place the kids will never forget. And be sure to visit Hugh Moore Park and take a ride on a mule-drawn canal boat.
Drive along the Delaware River and adjacent Delaware Canal State Park. Enjoy it even more by hiking, biking or cross-country skiing the towpath. Stop at New Hope for a premier shopping and dining experience, or Washington Crossing State Historic Park, where George Washington made his historic crossing of the Delaware on Christmas Eve, 1776. The southern terminus is historic Bristol Borough. Settled in 1681, Victorian mansions meet the vital Delaware Riverfront in one of the Corridor’s oldest town.
